Finding confidence through film

Sometimes, discovering what we love can open the door to opportunities we might never have imagined. For James, that passion is film — and pursuing it has helped him develop new skills, gain qualifications and grow in confidence.

James has lived in a long-term Shared Lives arrangement with carers Jann and Richard since 2019. He has a longstanding interest in film, from watching and reviewing productions to creating his own. Although James can be shy and finds large crowds or interactions with unfamiliar people challenging, his enthusiasm shines through when he talks about something he loves.

Recognising just how much film means to James, Richard encouraged him to explore whether he could take his interest further through education. Together, they visited Central Bedfordshire College to find out what opportunities might be available.

James was drawn to the Level 1 Media Studies course and decided to take the next step by enrolling. There were some initial questions about how he might manage the coursework, but Jann and Richard encouraged him to give it a try. Their advice was simple:

“If you don't try, you'll never know.”

It was an encouraging reminder that having a go can be the first step towards discovering what is possible.

Turning a passion into achievement

As James began his studies, the college explored options for additional support with his coursework. While this support wasn't ultimately available, this didn't hold him back as James continued with his learning and worked towards completing the course.

With encouragement from Jann and Richard, he successfully completed and passed Level 1 Media Studies. Building on this achievement, James went on to study Level 2 — which he also passed.

Completing both qualifications was a significant achievement, reflecting James's commitment, creativity and willingness to keep going.

The courses also gave him the opportunity to bring his ideas to life. As part of each qualification, James wrote and produced a short film, putting his interests and developing skills into practice. And the projects became a family affair, with Jann and Richard happily agreeing to take on acting roles in his productions!

Their involvement was about more than lending a hand. It was another way of encouraging James to pursue something important to him, sharing in his enthusiasm and celebrating what he could achieve.

Growing in confidence and looking ahead

Throughout James's two years of study, Jann and Richard have seen a noticeable change in his confidence. They believe that completing his courses has had a positive effect on his self-esteem and personal development, and they are incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished.

For them, James's experience also carries an important message about recognising people's individual interests and ambitions, rather than making assumptions about what they might achieve.

As they explain:

“We should not limit what we think people with learning difficulties or disabilities can achieve. Often, it's just about finding something they are passionate about.”

It is a message that James's journey brings to life. His interest in film gave him a reason to explore further education, develop new skills and work towards qualifications he can be proud of. With encouragement along the way, he has taken meaningful steps towards a future that reflects his own interests and aspirations.

And he isn't stopping there.

James hopes his qualifications will help him secure a role in filmmaking in the future. Working in film remains his dream career, and he is keen to see where his passion might take him next.

Supporting people to live life their way

At Ategi, Shared Lives is about more than providing a place to live. It is about building relationships, recognising what matters to each person and supporting them to pursue the opportunities and experiences that make life meaningful.

For James, that has meant having the encouragement to explore his passion for film and take steps towards a career he dreams of pursuing. For Jann and Richard, it has meant seeing him grow in confidence and celebrating each milestone along the way.

James's story is a reminder that ambitions deserve to be taken seriously, and that the right encouragement can help people discover new possibilities for themselves.

Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as finding what you love — and having someone alongside you who believes you should give it a go.
