More than a break: friendship, confidence and adventures!
For two brothers, a short break with Shared Lives carer Sheila became an unforgettable adventure to Butlin’s in Bognor Regis – while giving their parents something just as valuable: time together.
For JS and DS, spending time with Sheila is always something to look forward to.
The two brothers live at home with their parents and enjoy regular short breaks with Sheila through Ategi’s Shared Lives service. Usually, that means a night or two during the week – a chance to enjoy a change of scenery, try something different and spend time with someone they know and trust.
But their latest break was a little more adventurous.
This time, Sheila took them to Butlin’s in Bognor Regis for a few days packed with fun, laughter and new experiences.
There were bumper cars, rounds of golf, bowling and plenty of entertainment to enjoy in the evenings. For JS and DS, it was an opportunity to get out, have fun and make memories together.
But for Sheila, there was something even more special to see.
Growing in confidence
Over time, Sheila has seen both brothers grow in confidence.
Their Shared Lives short breaks give them opportunities to experience new places and activities in a supportive environment, while developing their independence and simply enjoying being themselves.
The Butlin’s trip was another chance to do exactly that.
From trying different activities to enjoying the entertainment, JS and DS were able to make choices, have new experiences and enjoy an adventure away from home – with Sheila there to support them.
And while the brothers were having a brilliant time, their parents were able to enjoy some time together too.
That is one of the things that makes short breaks through Shared Lives so valuable. They provide people with opportunities to enjoy new experiences and build relationships, while also giving families the chance to rest, recharge and spend precious time together.
Their parents could relax knowing that JS and DS were safe, happy and having a great time.
Shared experiences, lasting friendships
The Butlin’s adventure didn't end there.
The following week, Sheila returned for another holiday – this time supporting three other people.
Two were people who, like JS and DS, live with their parents and enjoy short breaks with Sheila. The third was someone who lives with Sheila as part of a longer-term Shared Lives arrangement.
Once again, the group had an amazing time.
For Sheila, the two holidays offered something that went beyond the activities themselves. They showed how Shared Lives can bring people together through shared experiences, creating friendships and connections that can continue long after the holiday is over.
Whether someone stays with Sheila for a night, a few days or as part of a long-term arrangement, the focus remains the same: creating opportunities for people to live their lives their way, build meaningful relationships and be part of something.
A different kind of family time
For Sheila, being a Shared Lives carer is about much more than providing a place to stay.
It is about opening up her home, sharing experiences and helping people discover what they can do.
For JS and DS, their break to Butlin’s was a chance to have fun, spend time together and grow in confidence.
For their parents, it was an opportunity to have time together, safe in the knowledge that their sons were enjoying themselves.
And for everyone involved, it was a reminder of what can happen when people are given the right support, the freedom to try new things and the opportunity to build relationships.
Sometimes, a short break can mean so much more than a few nights away.
It can mean confidence. Friendship. New experiences. Family time. And memories that last.
That is the difference Shared Lives can make.
