Building confidence, one short break at a time

When L was referred to Ategi's Shared Lives short breaks service, she was finding life increasingly difficult. Feeling isolated and disengaged, she was experiencing challenges with her mental wellbeing, and the pressures were beginning to affect life at home for both L and her family.

Together, it was agreed that L would spend six days each month with a Shared Lives household, giving her the opportunity to enjoy new experiences, build her confidence and develop everyday life skills in a supportive family environment.

In just three months, the difference has been remarkable.

L is now volunteering at her local hospital café, where she has found a real sense of purpose and achievement. She has also gained the confidence to travel independently within her local community, opening up new opportunities and giving her greater freedom.

The positive impact has extended beyond L herself. She describes having a much closer relationship with her siblings because she now has new experiences, stories and achievements to share with them. Through her Shared Lives placement, she has also developed a genuine friendship with her carers' foster child, and the two enjoy spending time together and taking part in activities.

One of L's favourite activities has been cooking alongside her Shared Lives carers. Preparing meals together has helped her develop practical skills and greater confidence in the kitchen. She's especially proud of making her own bacon sandwiches and enjoys showing what she can do. If she keeps progressing at this pace, her mum might soon be treated to breakfast in bed!

Perhaps most importantly, L says she feels happier, more occupied and more connected to the people around her. She is spending less time feeling bored and more time doing things that matter to her. The confidence she has gained, the friendships she has built and the skills she continues to develop are helping her become more independent and optimistic about the future.

The difference Shared Lives has made

In just three months, L has grown in confidence, developed greater independence, built meaningful relationships and become more involved in her community. The additional support provided through Shared Lives has not only improved her own wellbeing but has also had a positive impact on family life, demonstrating how the right support at the right time can help people live fuller, more connected lives.
