Central Bedfordshire Shared Lives carers recognised at Windsor Castle

We are incredibly proud to share that two of our Shared Lives carers in Central Bedfordshire, Dyan Prior and Helen Pennell, were invited to attend a Royal reception at Windsor Castle, hosted by Their Majesties The King and Queen.

The reception, held on Wednesday 11 February 2026, brought together carers from across the UK to recognise their vital contribution to health and social care. Dyan and Helen attended alongside Kam, who they have supported through Shared Lives for more than 25 years.

For Kam, who has learning disabilities, Down’s syndrome and dementia, this has meant long-term stability, meaningful relationships and the opportunity to enjoy the things he loves, supported by Dyan as his full-time carer and Helen, who provides regular short breaks.

Their dedication and long-standing commitment were recently recognised with a special mention in the Shared Lives Plus Living Well Award.

Reflecting on the experience, Dyan said:
“It was a privilege and an honour to be invited to this amazing event. All could feel the warmth in the room! Our highlight was being able to share all of this with Kam, who was so overwhelmed by meeting Their Majesties and the Prime Minister, and he won’t stop talking about this for a long time to come.”

This special recognition highlights the life-changing impact that Shared Lives carers make every day, supporting people to live full, connected and meaningful lives within their communities.

We’re also delighted that this story has been featured in the Leighton Buzzard Observer, helping to raise awareness of Shared Lives and celebrate the incredible contribution of carers locally and nationally.
