Reflecting on Dean's journey as a Shared Lives Champion
When Dean's time as a Shared Lives Champion came to an end, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey he’s been on over the last 12 weeks.
The Shared Lives Champions role was a paid opportunity for people supported by Ategi to help promote Shared Lives in their local communities (Central Bedfordshire). Champions worked alongside staff in Central Bedfordshire to raise awareness about Shared Lives, encourage others to become carers, and represent the voice of people supported. Over the 12 weeks, Dean took part in community events, helped distribute flyers and posters, and had lots of conversations about what Shared Lives means to him—building confidence and gaining new skills along the way.
Becoming a Shared Lives Champion has been a transformative experience for Dean. “I’ve enjoyed the last 12 weeks and wish it could continue,” he told us. One of the things he appreciated most was the opportunity to get out into the community and help spread the word about Shared Lives. “Helping people in a similar situation to me” was a key motivation for Dean, and it was clear throughout his time as a Champion just how passionate he was about making a difference.
Dean’s involvement in Shared Lives has had a huge personal impact. Reflecting on how it changed his life, he said: “When I first came to Preety and Raj I was like a closed book, and now I have got lots of different chapters. They have helped me a lot.” Living with Preety and Raj has given Dean a sense of independence, growth, and belonging. “I don’t see Preety and Raj as my landlord or carers. I see them as my friends. They have so much trust in me. They are so laid back. I feel lucky.”
Dean also shared how his new environment helped him learn important life skills, particularly around managing money: “When I first moved in, I was awful and spending it like water. Now I can see what’s important and pay my bills and know that whatever money is left is mine.”
Throughout his time as a Champion, Dean particularly enjoyed attending events and connecting with others. “Going to different events, especially the bigger ones. I really took something from those. There was a girl called Kim, and she was inspiring.” Experiences like these not only allowed Dean to share the message of Shared Lives but also helped build his own confidence and sense of purpose.
Dean's growth in confidence has been remarkable. “Ever since I started, I’ve got more confidence. I can talk to people more than I used to get tongue-tied,” he said. This boost in confidence has extended beyond his role with Ategi and into his everyday life. He now works at the airport and is preparing to travel to Dubai on his own – something he never thought he’d be able to do. “Who’d have thought I’d be able to go to the airport by myself?” he said proudly.
When asked what he would say to someone thinking about becoming a Shared Lives carer, Dean didn’t hesitate: “100% I would encourage them to do it. Being a carer helps a lot of people in so many different situations. And building the relationship from carer to friend. I wouldn’t be where I am or have been to places, I have, have the money to do it if it wasn’t for my carers.”
So, what makes Shared Lives special to Dean? Simply put: “Being part of a family.”
Thank you, Dean, for everything you’ve contributed over the past 12 weeks. Your warmth, honesty, and commitment have inspired others and shown just how powerful Shared Lives can be. We can’t wait to see what you do next!
