Social Activities Scheme

We can take so many things for granted – like doing a favourite activity; trying something new, or doing something just because we can and ........ we have someone to do it with.

When we asked people who use our services what is important to them, ‘friendships and relationships’ were at the top of their list. The Social Activities Scheme was set up to try and reduce the isolation experienced by so many people who have a learning disability. It is a highly popular scheme with a growing waiting list.

What is the Social Activities Scheme?

The scheme offers people the opportunity to be part of a group which meets regularly, to organise social activities of their choice.

The groups are supported by volunteers who vary in age and interests.

Groups meet every two weeks and decide what they would like to do. They mostly meet in the evening, occasionally getting together for special events at weekends and during the Summer months.

Who is it for?

You have to be over 18 to take part. Those taking part have a range of abilities, but must be able to get to the group on their own - or with their own support. 1:1 support is not provided.

Most groups are in Cardiff. One group meets in Barry.

You must like being part of a group to join the scheme.

What do they do?

It is up to the groups to decide what to do. All of the groups are different.

These are some of the most popular activities : Ten pin bowling. Eating out. Going to the cinema. Karaoke. Skittles. Watching a show. Ice skating.
