Celebrating Dyan and Helen: Special mention in the Living well award

We are absolutely delighted to share that Shared Lives carers Dyan and Helen in Central Bedfordshire have received a special mention in the Living Well Award from Shared Lives Plus.

This recognition is a testament to their extraordinary commitmentcompassion, and the joyful, person-centred support they’ve provided for over 25 years to Kam, who lives with learning disabilities, Down syndrome, and now dementia.

The judges were deeply moved by the breadth of care Dyan and Helen offer, and their flexible, creative approach to supporting Kam through the changing stages of his life. Their nomination stood out for the way they continue to make life meaningful and joyful, even in the face of complex challenges.

One recent example of their dedication was an experience they created for Kam: a trip to the Empress Museum Theatre in Earls Court to see the live production of Come Alive! — a circus show inspired by The Greatest Showman.

Kam arrived in style in a limousine, dressed as the Greatest Showman himself. His outfit and enthusiasm made him the star of the queue, with fellow theatre-goers asking for photos. Once the access crew saw Kam, they treated him like a VIP, escorting him through the venue and giving him a backstage experience.

Kam met the cast, explored a mock circus backstage, and took his ringside seat in the big top. From there, he was able to interact with performers, receive a personal serenade and fist bump from the Greatest Showman, and he was also invited to take a bow at the end of the show. The cast and audience gave him a standing ovation.

This wasn’t just a day out; it was a memory made with intention. Dyan and Helen are now helping Kam create a memory book so he can revisit this special experience again and again.

Their work exemplifies what Shared Lives is all about: relationships built on trust, creativity, and care that go far beyond the basics.

We’re so proud to see Dyan and Helen recognised by Shared Lives Plus. They will also receive a certificate to mark this special mention, a small token of appreciation.

Congratulations, Dyan and Helen, and thank you for everything you do.
