Ategi at the Learning Disability Wales Annual Conference
During November 2025, Ategi was proud to take part in the Learning Disability Wales Annual Conference, held in Llandudno and Swansea. This year’s theme, “My Home Matters,” focused on the importance of home being more than just a physical space; it’s about belonging, security, and independence.
The conference brought together professionals, advocates, and people with lived experience to explore how we can create homes that truly meet the needs of people with learning disabilities. There were inspiring workshops on topics such as:
- Using AI and technology in the home – innovative ideas to support independence and safety.
- Homes Not Hospitals campaign – a powerful movement led by Stolen Lives to ensure people are supported in real homes, not institutions. Ategi strongly supports this campaign and joined the Senedd protest last year.
Our Role at the Conference
Ategi was delighted to present at both events. At the Swansea conference, Pip (a person we support through Shared Lives) co-presented with Rich (a staff member), and Pip was an absolute star! Her humour and personal story captivated the audience, and many attendees approached her afterwards to express their appreciation.
Pip reflected on the experience, saying:
“I enjoyed the event and sharing my experience with others!”
Her voice and perspective are at the heart of what Ategi stands for, empowering people to live the lives they choose.
Why This Matters
The conversations at these conferences remind us why our work is so important. Home is not just a building, it’s a foundation for wellbeing, independence, and community. Campaigns like Homes Not Hospitals highlight the urgent need to move away from institutional care and towards real homes where people can thrive.
We’re excited to explore some of the ideas shared, especially around technology and innovation, and continue advocating for homes that truly matter.
