Kam, Dyan and Helen

Shared Lives - Central Bedfordshire

For more than 25 years, Kam has been part of Shared Lives in Central Bedfordshire, supported by two carers who have been constants in his life: Dyan, his full-time Shared Lives carer, and Helen, who provides regular short breaks. Together, they form a small community around Kam that gives him stability, warmth and opportunities to enjoy the things he loves.

Kam lives with learning disabilities, Downs syndrome, and dementia. Through all of life’s changes, Dyan and Helen have been by his side, offering support that is thoughtful, consistent and centred around what matters most to him. Their commitment was recently recognised by Shared Lives Plus, who gave them a special mention in the Living Well Award for their flexible, caring approach. Although the category was filled with exceptional nominees, the judges felt strongly that Dyan and Helen’s long-term dedication deserved acknowledgement.

Kam’s days are full of things that bring him genuine enjoyment, many of which are captured in a memory book that helps him look back on special experiences. These aren’t grand gestures for the sake of it; they’re moments that reflect who he is and what makes him smile.

He has celebrated birthdays in style, including his 50th at ABBA Voyage, arriving in a stretched limousine with family cheering him on. For his 48th, he took to the sky in a helicopter, living out his long-time Airwolf dream with co-pilot Dave.

Family celebrations have also been an important part of his life. In recent months, Kam enjoyed a toast with the Priors during a family gathering, mocktail in hand, clearly delighted to be at the centre of the festivities.

Adventures continue to play a big part in his routine. On a recent community holiday at Elveden Centre Parcs, Kam spent time with Helen while Dyan enjoyed some well-earned respite. A favourite moment from the trip captured him mid-splash in the swimming dome, completely absorbed in the experience and having the best time.

Throughout his time with Ategi, Kam’s needs have changed. What has stayed consistent is the care around him. Dyan and Helen understand how he communicates, what helps him feel secure, and what sparks his curiosity. They adapt with him, making sure he stays connected to the people and activities that enrich his life.

This is at the core of Shared Lives: offering someone a stable home environment, strong relationships and opportunities to keep learning, exploring and enjoying life, all within a model that values continuity and genuine connection.

Kam’s story shows the impact of long-term, person-centred support. It highlights what Shared Lives can offer when carers, coordinators and families work closely together over many years, not only good support, but a life full of meaningful experiences.

We are proud to share Kam’s journey and to celebrate the remarkable care that Dyan and Helen provide. Their work reflects everything Shared Lives aims to make possible.
